Trade and Diplomatic Fallout
In response to the deadly attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists, India has banned imports from Pakistan and reduced diplomatic staff in Islamabad. Pakistan has retaliated by halting border trade, closing its airspace to Indian airlines, and expelling Indian diplomats. Additionally, Pakistan warned that any disruption of river flows regulated by a longstanding treaty would be seen as an act of war.
Military Posturing and Missile Tests
Pakistan test-fired a surface-to-surface ballistic missile amid escalating tensions, a move perceived by New Delhi as a provocative act. This follows nearly daily incidents of gunfire exchange along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
Calls for Restraint
International actors, including the European Union, have urged both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to de-escalate the situation. The United Nations Security Council will likely convene to address the rising tensions.
