The accident took place on the Kasara-bound train between Diva and Mumbra stations. Witnesses reported that the overcrowded train brushed against another train traveling in the opposite direction, causing passengers to lose their balance and fall onto the tracks . Railway officials suspect that passengers’ backpacks may have brushed against commuters hanging from the footboard of the opposite train, contributing to the falls .
Government Response
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the incident “unfortunate” and announced an investigation by the Railways. State Minister Girish Mahajan declared a compensation of ₹5 lakh for each bereaved family . In response to the tragedy, the Railway Ministry has decided to install automatic doors in all local trains to enhance passenger safety .
Political Reactions
Opposition leaders have criticized the government’s handling of railway infrastructure. Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and called for ₹25 lakh compensation for the victims’ families. MNS chief Raj Thackeray and NCP leader Sharad Pawar attributed the overcrowding to increased migration to Mumbai and called for better safety features like automatic doors and more AC locals .
